The Center for Research Data and Digital Scholarship (CRDDS) offers a full range of support and opportunities for your digital and data-intensive research and learning needs, including workshops, talks, and consultation hours, which are free and open to all unless otherwise noted.

If you've noticed all of the snow pictures in the last few weeks it's because we're hoping that we'll still get a real winter, while disregarding all data to the contrary.

Interdisciplinary Consultation Hours

Need help with your data? We're here for you! We host open, free consultation hours to help you with your data-intensive research needs. Come with your application, code, or general questions and speak to our experts on research data management, digital humanities, geospatial data, statistical support from LISA, and research computing.

Consults are open to all – from undergrad to faculty and beyond.

Consultations will take place on Tuesdays from 12-1 p.m. in-person at Norlin Library, room E206 or via Zoom, and Thursdays from 1-2 p.m. via Zoom only.
Registration is required to receive the Zoom link. If you are unable to attend our consultation hours and would like to set up a call, email crdds@colorado.edu.

Love Data Week Is Here!

It's International Love Data Week! This year's theme is Where's the Data? The goal is to connect everyone – from data newcomers to veterans – with the training and resources they need to make progress on issues close to their hearts. While there are data events happening around the world (find one here), at CU Boulder we're offering unique events looking at data close to our hearts.

Once again, we're holding the Buffalization Data Visualization challenge! In celebration of CU Boulder's 150th anniversary we're inviting you to use a dataset of historic campus buildings to create a data visualization with your preferred software or tools. (You can even hand make or draw a visualization!) The deadline to enter is Sunday, February 15th. For more information visit our website.
Today (February 9 at 1:30) we're offering a workshop Growth Not Violence: Collecting, Interpreting & Sharing Data about Trans & Nonbinary People. Data about trans people can provide insights that improve the well-being of the community, and encourage widespread integration with society; this data can also inadvertently cause profound harm. Attendees will consider the whole data lifecycle from research planning to presentation. Registration required.
Join us for a virtual hackathon co-hosted by the National Ecological Observatory Network (NEON) and the Environmental Data Science Innovation & Impact Lab (ESIIL)! This event will provide an introduction to the NSF Harnessing the Data Revolution (HDR) Machine Learning Challenge, including a virtual space to form a team and get started with a submission. The goal of the challenge is to predict out-of-domain biological, ecological, and environmental data. The challenge closes Feb 22, 2026.

Research Data Foundations Camp (Virtual)

Join the Center for Research Data & Digital Scholarship from Tuesday, March 17th - Thursday, March 19th, 10am-4pm each day, for our Research Data Foundations Camp designed specifically with graduate students in mind (although all are welcome). The Camp will provide a gentle introduction to data and programming-related research tools that will increase users' access to cutting-edge methods as they pursue their programs and research. No previous experience in coding or programming is required! Those who complete the optional assignments will be eligible to receive CU Boulder’s Research Data Foundations micro-credential. This is a virtual event that will be happening on Zoom.

NSF FAIR Facilities and Instruments project co-led by CRDDS releases recommendations

The “FAIR Facilities and Instruments” project, co-led by CRDDS researchers, released its “Recommendations Toward a Framework for Adoption and Use of Persistent Identifiers for Research Facilities, Platforms, and Instruments”. Funded by the U.S. National Science Foundation (NSF) Findable Accessible Interoperable Reusable Open Science (FAIROS) Research Coordination Network (RCN) program (NSF Awards 2226396, 2226397, 2226398), the FAIR Facilities and Instruments RCN project is led by a collaboration between the NSF National Center for Atmospheric Research, CU Boulder, and Florida State �Թ��. The project team developed their recommendations from discussions at three in-person workshops and many other conversations with a wide range of communities over the last three years. These recommendations provide an important step in advancing the use of persistent identifiers (PIDs) for research facilities, platforms, and instruments to enable open and transparent science, discoverability of research instrumentation, and attribution for research facilities and the people who operate them.

NVIDIA GPU Training

Wednesday, December 3, 2-4pm. We're excited to announce that Zoe Ryan of NVIDIA will be leading a workshop on using NVIDIA GPUs with Python! In this workshop, you'll get hands-on experience accelerating Python codes with NVIDIA GPUs. We will utilize code samples in three main categories to introduce you to Python GPU accelerated computing. First, we will explore drop-in replacements for SciPy and NumPy code through the CuPy library. Next, we’ll cover NVIDIA RAPIDS, which provides GPU acceleration for end-to-end data science workloads. By the end of the workshop, you'll have the skills to start accelerating your own Python codes with NVIDIA GPUs!

Showcase of Open, Digital, and Public Scholarship

The Center for Research Data and Digital Scholarship (CRDDS) and the Office of Public and Community Engaged Scholarship (PACES) have partnered to host a Showcase of Open, Digital, and Public Scholarship at CU Boulder on December 5, 2025 from 11am-1pm. Lunch will be provided!

The showcase will bring attention and recognition to scholarship that centers equity, innovation, and community impact. We will highlight projects with significant open access, digital and/or public or community engaged scholarship components. Representatives from these projects will present their work and generate discussion about the role of open, digital, and public scholarship in our current era.

Join us to learn about the values, methodologies, and unique impact generated by open, digital, and public scholarship at CU Boulder!

The Scholarly Publishing and Academic Resources Coalition (SPARC), of which CU Boulder is a member, has developed a Guide for Authors Complying with U.S. Federal Agency Public Access and Publisher Policies. The resource provides researchers guidance at different points in the research lifecycle for navigating federal agency funding requirements and publisher policies around public access to research outputs. CRDDS provides several resources, including consultations and open research publishing options, that can help you to meet these policy requirements.
