March 2026 Digital Accessibility Buff Award Winner
Julian was nominated by a DAO staff member, Megan Mock. Julian's nomination stated, "Julian hasÌýexhibitedÌýa deep dedication to learning and implementing digital accessibility best practices for PEER Physics curriculum and resources. Creating accessible STEM content presentsÌýadditionalÌýcomplexities and considerations. Julian has approached this with great care and attention to detail. I will write about my direct experience working with Julian, but I also wanted to shout out that Julian has partnered extensively with DAO's Accessibility Training and Outreach Manager, Ally Bartley, to grow their digital accessibility skills.
PEER Physics offers a resource library for STEM curriculum that includes videos, simulations, experiment outlines, and PDF readings. The resource library is available to and used by primary, secondary, and post-secondary educators across the US. Julian wanted to implement best practices to make the video content in the resource library more accessible.ÌýAs most of the videos do not have an audio component, the main focus was to learn about audio description and descriptive transcript options.ÌýWe reviewed a sample of the videos and met with Julian to discuss recommendations, ideas, and guidance. Julian set off to make descriptive transcripts, and did an incredible job incorporating the information and resources that were shared. Thank you, Julian, for your dedication to creating accessible STEM content!"
