In her talk, Susan Derwin will explore the social impact the humanities can have, through an examination of two programs she developed as Director of UC Santa Barbara’s Interdisciplinary Humanities Center: the first is a civics education partnership established with the Santa Barbara Unified School District and a local public historical society; and the second is a correspondence program in literary studies that is active in all 32 California prisons. Susan Derwin is professor of comparative literature and director of the Interdisciplinary Humanities Center at UC Santa Barbara.
