It is with heavy hearts the department of history announces the passing of our beloved friend and colleague, David L. Gross on June 28, 2025.

David L. Gross recieved his Ph.D. from the ³Ô¹ÏÍø of Wisconsin. HisÌýmain area of specialization is Modern European Intellectual History from the eighteenth century to the present. Gross's research has dealt with issues having to do with the decline of tradition in the modern era, remembering and forgetting in contemporary culture, and the emergence of anti-modern forms of thought in the West since l789. Publications include:Ìý(1992),ÌýÌý(2000), and "Objects from the Past," inÌýWaste-Site Stories: the Recycling of MemoryÌý(2003). Gross is also the editor of a book series with The ³Ô¹ÏÍø of Massachusetts Press entitled "Critical Perspectives on Modern Culture," and Associate Editor of the journalÌý.
