On Saturday, February 21, the Fairview Speech and Debate team will be hosting the Fairview Fling!

Fairview High School is located about ten minutes away from the �Թ�� of Colorado on the Skip line at 1515 Greenbriar Blvd.

Regardless of if you carry previous judging experience or not, all students are able to participate! With just 5 minutes of training you can be eligible to judge several events.

Students will be competing in a wide variety of events including interpretation of humor, creative storytelling, policy debate, and debate on current events. Judges are needed from 8am until 7pm, but time commitments are flexible and students are not required to stay for the full duration of the event. Volunteer hours and payment are available for participating students.

Internship Opportunities

This summer, PIIE offers paid internships with local non-profit and government organizations across the Boulder and Denver metro area. Opportunities span fields such as communications, marketing, arts and culture, community programs, public health, research, media, events, and nonprofit development, allowing students to gain hands-on experience while making a meaningful impact in their community.

Why Participate in PIIE?

In addition to gaining meaningful, real-world experience, PIIE interns receive:

This month we’re highlighting Laura Rodriguez (IAFS ’07), who shares how her IAFS experiences shaped her career, recent accomplishments, and a glimpse into life after CU. Here’s what she had to say:

What are you up to now (role, organization, location)?
I am the Chief Strategy Officer at the Colorado Office of Economic Development and International Trade (OEDIT). OEDIT is a State Agency a part of the Governors Office.
How has your IAFS background shaped your path?
I loved the mix of political science, economic development and foreign language. My studies at CU allowed me to pursue activities abroad, and Master’s Degree from Johns Hopkins School of Advanced International Studies and a return to Colorado.
A recent accomplishment or moment you’re proud of?
One of my most prideful moments, though not recent, was being a part of the planning and staff for President Obama’s trip to the G8 summit in Italy.
One fun fact about life after CU?
Working hard in college and taking advantage of every opportunity (internships, student government, study abroad, volunteering, part-time jobs) will give you such an advantage once you graduate and enter the workforce.

Featured Academic Insight: Venezuela–Cuba Connections

CU Boulder faculty expert Dr. Jen Triplett (Sociology) sheds light on the deep historical and political ties between Venezuela and Cuba. Her research explains how, over the past 25 years, the two countries built a relationship rooted in shared ideology, economic exchange, and political supportfrom the era of Hugo Chávez through Nicolás Maduro’s presidency. This alliance has had far-reaching impacts on regional politics and social dynamics, and recent U.S. actions have raised questions about how Havana may respond as Venezuela’s future unfolds.

Student Perspective: A Historic Turning Point

IAFS student Gabriela Benchluch wrote a compelling piece, “A Historic Day for Venezuelans: The Dictator Has Fallen”, on Her Campus. In it, she describes January 3, 2026 as a monumental moment, marked by a major military operation resulting in the arrest of Nicolás Maduro and his wife. Gabriela’s article contextualizes the human, political, and social stakes of this event, and offers insight into how Venezuelans and the diaspora are responding to dramatic change.
