Free, confidential trauma-focused counseling and advocacy available at OVA

The Office of Victim Assistance (OVA) offers both trauma/incident specific counseling as well as advocacy.

  • The trauma-specific counseling is short term, up to 6 free counseling sessions to students, faculty, and staff impacted by a potentially traumatic or life disruptive event. Witnesses and secondary survivors helping a friend, partner, family member or colleague through a traumatic experience can also receive support. Examples of potential traumatic incidents are available on the OVA website.
    • Referrals to community providers are offered for longer-term counseling needs.
  • Advocacy can vary based on the person's needs and can include informing people of their rights and reporting options, medical options, safety planning, information on civil protection orders, academic advocacy, and assistance with navigating systems (academic, administrative, criminal, and more). OVA will support the individual in whatever they decide is best for them.
  • Ones does not have to report to another office to receive services from OVA.

OVA Advocate Counselors work with a client's support and healing goals, and support can include processing one's traumatic experience(s), as well as learning coping skills and developing self-care.
