F-1 program extensions

If your F-1 program end date on your Form I-20 is May 2026 and you will not be able to complete your degree requirements by that date, review the information below and contact ISSS for advising as soon as possible.

International students in F-1 status are expected to complete their degree programs within the timeframe listed on their Form I-20, which is based on the degree length published in the official university catalog.

Under federal regulations, F-1 program extensions may be approved only if the student is currently maintaining F-1 status, making normal academic progress, and the delay in completion is due to compelling academic or medical reasons. ISSS cannot approve an extension simply because required courses remain.

Examples of qualifying academic reasons include:

  • change of major
  • change in research topics
  • unexpected research problems
  • retaking coursework

Approval is not guaranteed. F-1 program extensions are reviewed carefully and approved only in limited circumstances.Ìý Submitting your request early allows ISSS time to review your application and, if necessary, advise you on alternative options.
