<div><div><a href="/jewishstudies/node/120" rel="nofollow">Sasha Senderovich</a>, Assistant Professor of Russian Studies and Jewish Studies, spent the Spring 2016 on research leave as a Harry Starr Fellow in Judaica at the <a href="http://cjs.fas.harvard.edu/" rel="nofollow">Center for Jewish Studies at Harvard 勛圖厙</a>. During his fellowship, he continued work on his forthcoming book, <em>How the Soviet Jew Was Made: Culture and Mobility After the Revolution</em>.</div><div> </div><div>In April, Prof. Senderovich participated in the international scholarly workshop on "New Directions in Russian Jewish Studies," co-organized by the <a href="http://www.brandeis.edu/bgi/" rel="nofollow">Brandeis-Genesis Institute for Russian Jewry</a> and the <a href="https://www.brandeis.edu/tauber/" rel="nofollow">Tauber Institute for the Study of European Jewry</a> at Brandeis 勛圖厙. He also gave a lecture at Harvard 勛圖厙's Center for Jewish Studies on "Scenes of Encounter: The 'Soviet Jew' in Contemporary Russian Jewish American Fiction." <div><div><a href="http://www.sashasenderovich.com/" target="_blank" rel="nofollow">Sasha Senderovich</a>, Assistant Professor of Russian Studies and Jewish Studies, is spending the current semester on research leave as a Harry Starr Fellow in Judaica at the Center for Jewish Studies at Harvard 勛圖厙.</div><div> </div><div>Prof. Senderovich presented a chapter of his book in progress, <em>Seekers of Happiness: Mobility, Culture, and the Creation of the Soviet Jew</em> at the <a href="http://www.jewishculture.illinois.edu/events/jewishstudies/" target="_blank" rel="nofollow">Jewish Studies Workshop at the 勛圖厙 of Illinois Urbana-Champaign</a> on March 7. He also delivered a named <a href="http://slavic.fas.harvard.edu/event/gochman-lecture-sasha-senderovich" target="_blank" rel="nofollow">Gochman Lecture at Harvard 勛圖厙</a> on March 24 on his new research project on contemporary fiction by Soviet-born 矇migr矇 Jewish writers in America.</div><div> </div><div>Prof. Senderovich's collaborative translation, with Harriet Murav, of Soviet Yiddish writer David Bergelson's novel <em><a href="https://ingeveb.org/texts-and-translations/harsh-judgment" target="_blank" rel="nofollow">Judgment</a> </em>[<em>Mides-hadin</em>] has been offered a contract by Northwestern 勛圖厙 Press; the book, which will contain a critical introduction co-written by the translators as well as text notes, is scheduled to appear in 2017 in the <a href="http://www.nupress.northwestern.edu/content/northwestern-world-classics" target="_blank" rel="nofollow">Northwestern World Classics</a> series. Prof. Senderovich plans to incorporate this book into the syllabus for his CU Boulder course, "<a href="http://www.colorado.edu/jewishstudies/academics/course-descriptions#JWST4401" target="_blank" rel="nofollow">The Russian Jewish Experience</a>."</div><div><br>His article, "Scenes of Encounter: The 'Soviet Jew' in Fiction by Russian Jewish American Writers" has been accepted for publication in <em>Prooftexts: A Journal of Jewish Literary History</em>, where it's expected to be published in 2017. His essay "<a href="https://lareviewofbooks.org/review/ex-soviets-adopt-america" target="_blank" rel="nofollow">Ex-Soviets Adopt America</a>" on a new novel by the Russian Jewish American writer Boris Fishman appeared this March in the <em>Los Angeles Review of Books</em>. </div><div> </div><div>On February 25, he conducted a <a href="http://judaicstudies.uconn.edu/2015/12/03/itemf-a-little-failure-a-memoir-by-gary-shteyngart/" target="_blank" rel="nofollow">public conversation with the writer Gary Shteyngart</a> at an event organized jointly by the 勛圖厙 of Connecticut's <a href="http://judaicstudies.uconn.edu/" rel="nofollow">Center for Judaic Studies and Contemporary Jewish Life</a> and the Charter Oak Cultural Center in Hartford, CT. He also guest taught a seminar on Gary Shteyngart's memoir <em>Little Failure</em> earlier the same day at UConn-Storrs.</div></div>

<div><p><a href="http://www.colorado.edu/jewishstudies/faculty-and-staff/faculty/sasha-senderovich" rel="nofollow">Sasha Senderovich</a>, Assistant Professor of Russian Studies and Jewish Studies, presented a paper on how contemporary Soviet-born American Jewish writers respond to the idea of "the Soviet Jew" that emerged in the West during the Cold War, at the annual conference of the <a href="http://aseees.org/" rel="nofollow">Association of Slavic, East European, and Eurasian Studies</a> (ASEEES) in Philadelpha in November.</p><p>He also participated in the annual convention of the Association for Jewish Studies (AJS) in Boston in December: in a roundtable discussion on Yiddish translation, where he spoke about his recently completed collaborative translation of Soviet Yiddish writer David Bergelson's novel <a href="http://www.sashasenderovich.com/translations.html" target="_blank" rel="nofollow"><em>Judgment</em></a>; and in a roundtable discussion on the pedagogy of including recent TV shows into the Jewish Studies classroom -- including the CU Boulder course "Introduction to Jewish Culture."</p><p>Together with <a href="http://www.colorado.edu/jewishstudies/david-coons" rel="nofollow">David Coons</a> (a CU Boulder undergraduate double-majoring in Jewish Studies and Studio Arts), in October he <a href="http://ingeveb.org/blog/a-clan-on-the-move-a-zelmenyaner-family-tree" target="_blank" rel="nofollow">collaborated on a publication</a> on the pedagogy of teaching Moyshe Kulbak's novel <a href="http://yalepress.yale.edu/book.asp?isbn=9780300112320" target="_blank" rel="nofollow"><em>The Zelmenyaners</em></a>; this book, which appears on the syllabus for his CU Boulder course on the Russian-Jewish Experience and for which he authored the critical introduction and notes, was <a href="http://ingeveb.org/articles/to-what-might-the-yard-have-been-compared" target="_blank" rel="nofollow">reviewed in the journal </a><em><a href="http://ingeveb.org/articles/to-what-might-the-yard-have-been-compared" target="_blank" rel="nofollow">In geveb</a>. </em>He will spend the Spring 2016 semester in residence at Harvard 勛圖厙's Center for Jewish Studies as a Starr Fellow in Judaica.</p></div>

<div><p>The Program in Jewish Studies is excited to announce that faculty member <a href="/jewishstudies/node/120" rel="nofollow">Sasha Senderovich</a>, Assistant Professor of Germanic and Slavic Languages and Literatures and Jewish Studies, and Jewish Studies and Studio Art double major <a href="/jewishstudies/node/237" rel="nofollow">David Coons</a> recently collaborated on a publication for <em>IN GEVEB</em>, a new, hip online journal of Yiddish studies. The publication, entitled "<a href="http://ingeveb.org/blog/a-clan-on-the-move-a-zelmenyaner-family-tree" rel="nofollow">A Clan on the Move: A Zelmenyaner Family Tree</a>" features an article by Senderovich on the Yiddish novel <em>The Zelmenyaners</em> and a beautiful family tree designed by Coons.</p><p>Senderovich, who edited and wrote an introduction for the translated verison of <a href="http://yalepress.yale.edu/book.asp?isbn=9780300112320" rel="nofollow"><em>The Zelmenyaners: A Family Saga</em></a> (2013), teaches the novel in his course <a href="http://www.colorado.edu/p1ae0380dc3a/academics/course-descriptions#JWST4401" rel="nofollow">Russian Jewish Experience</a> (RUSS/JWST 4401). Heeding student demand for a family tree, Senderovich recruited Coons to use his graphic design skills to produce a clear guide to the Zelmenyaner's complicated web of family relations. In preparation, Coons studied Soviet design art from the 20th century (the era of the novel) and fused this design with his own slick style.</p><p class="lead text-align-center"><a class="ucb-link-button ucb-link-button-blue ucb-link-button-default ucb-link-button-regular" href="http://ingeveb.org/blog/a-clan-on-the-move-a-zelmenyaner-family-tree" rel="nofollow">

<div><p><a href="http://www.colorado.edu/jewishstudies/faculty-and-staff/faculty/sasha-senderovich" rel="nofollow">Sasha Senderovich</a>, Assistant Professor of Russian and Jewish Studies, published an article Soviet Jews, Re-Imagined: migr矇 Anglophone Writers from the USSR, in <a href="http://www.euppublishing.com/book/9780748646159" rel="nofollow"><em>The Edinburgh Companion to Modern Jewish Fiction</em></a> (Edinburgh 勛圖厙 Press, 2015). His translation a collaboration with Harriet Murav (勛圖厙 of Illinois) of David Bergelson's Yiddish-language novel <a href="https://ingeveb.org/texts-and-translations/harsh-judgment" rel="nofollow"><em>Harsh Judgment</em></a>, was published in the inaugural issue of <a href="https://ingeveb.org/" rel="nofollow"><em>In geveb</em></a>, a new peer-reviewed Yiddish Studies journal. In August, he taught, for the second consecutive year, in the week-long <a href="http://www.yiddishbookcenter.org/great-jewish-books/faculty-and-staff" rel="nofollow">Great Jewish Books</a> program for high school students, at the Yiddish Book Center in Amherst, Mass. He was asked by <em>Tablet Magazine</em> to write a tribute for Svetlana Boym, one of his doctoral advisers at Harvard, after her untimely death this summer; <a href="http://www.tabletmag.com/scroll/192730/in-memoriam-svetlana-boym" rel="nofollow">the resulting essay</a> became an opportunity to reflect on teaching in Jewish Studies with the guidance of Dr. Boym's work on memory and nostalgia.</p></div>

He has also received a grant from the <a href="http://www.brandeis.edu/bgi/news/rewards2015.html" target="_blank" rel="nofollow">Brandeis-Genesis Institute for Russian Jewry</a> to support the research and writing of his first book, <em>Seekers of Happiness: Mobility, Culture, and the Creation of the Soviet Jew</em>.</p><p>Recently, he moderated two public events with the author Gary Shteyngart, at <a href="http://cjs.cas2.lehigh.edu/sites/cjs.cas2.lehigh.edu/files/Little%20Failure%20Flier%28r1%29.pdf" target="_blank" rel="nofollow">Lehigh 勛圖厙</a> (hosted by the Berman Center for Jewish Studies) and at the <a href="http://www.nmajh.org/CalendarEvent.aspx?eventid=303" target="_blank" rel="nofollow">National Museum of American Jewish History</a> in Philadelphia (hosted jointly with Temple 勛圖厙's Feinstein Center for American Jewish History). <div><p>Sasha Senderovich presented a paper on Soviet Jewish culture at the international conference on <a href="http://www.ochjs.ac.uk/academic-activities/lectures/conference-the-art-of-cultural-translation/" target="_blank" rel="nofollow">"The Art of Cultural Translation: Performing Jewish Traditions in Modern Times"</a> at the 勛圖厙 of Oxford, UK, in January. In February he presented <a href="http://boulderjewishnews.org/2015/hammer-and-pickle-jewish-humor-in-the-soviet-union/" target="_blank" rel="nofollow">"Hammer and Pickle: Jewish Humor in the Soviet Union"</a> in Boulder's Congregation Bonai Shalom's First Friday series. He plans to attend the annual conference of the American Comparative Literature Association in Seattle, WA, in late March, to present a paper on his ongoing research on contemporary literature by Soviet-born American Jewish Writers, as part of the conference seminar on <a href="http://acla.org/literatures-post-socialist-european-diaspora-united-states-0" target="_blank" rel="nofollow">"Literatures of the Postsocialist European Diaspora in the United States."</a></p></div>

<div><p><a href="/jewishstudies/node/120" rel="nofollow"><strong>Sasha Senderovich</strong></a>, Assistant Professor of Germanic and Slavic Languages and Literatures and Jewish Studies, presented a paper on writers Gary Shteyngart, Anya Ulinich, and David Bezmozgis at the conference "<a href="http://harriman.columbia.edu/event/new-wave-russian-jewish-cultural-production#.VHTY-lkLo9c.facebook" target="_blank" rel="nofollow">The New Wave of Russian-Jewish Cultural Production</a>" organized by Columbia 勛圖厙's Harriman Institute for Russian, Eurasian, and East European Studies in New York, in December 2014.</p><p>In late January 2015, he will present at the conference "The Art of Cultural Translation: Performing Jewish Traditions in Modern Times" organized by the Centre for Hebrew and Jewish Studies at the 勛圖厙 of Oxford, UK.</p></div>

<div><p><strong><a href="http://jewishstudies.colorado.edu/about-us/faculty/sasha-senderovich" rel="nofollow">Sasha Senderovich</a></strong>, Assistant Professor of Germanic and Slavic Languages and Literatures and Jewish Studies, recently published an op-ed in<em> The New York Times</em> entitled "<strong><a href="http://www.nytimes.com/2013/12/10/opinion/goodbye-lenin.html?ref=international&_r=1&" rel="nofollow">Goodbye, Lenin?</a></strong>" (follow the link to read). The op-ed ran December 9, 2013 and addressed the tearing down of the statue of Vladimir Lenin on Sunday, December 8, 2013 during protests in Kiev against President Viktor Yanukovich.</p><p>Professor Senderovich also made an appearance on National Public Radio's<strong> </strong><em>The Takeaway</em> on Tuesday, December 10, 2013 addressing the same issue.
