Cryogenic Trap

Our second generation ion trap is cryogenically cooled to 4K. In addition to laser-cooling ions in the trap for translationally cold samples, this also gives us ro-vibrationally cold molecules. This offers lots of exciting new opportunities for probing fundamental physics in molecules. We will be able to investigate rotational and vibrational state dependence of reactions to understand how internal energy distributions can impact collisions and reaction dynamics.

Another goal of this experiment is to take precision spectra of molecular products of collisions and reactions to probe the resulting molecular structure and quantum states.Ìý
