We sent this email on Thursday, Jan. 15, to students who had not applied for COF and were eligible for Fall 2025.

Dear [first],

Our records indicate that you haven't applied for the College Opportunity Fund (COF) for Fall 2025. There is still time to apply but you need to take action now.

You must apply for COF by 5 p.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 27, 2026, to receive the COF tuition reduction for your eligible Fall 2025 classes.

COF was created by the Colorado Legislature to pay a portion of total in-state tuition for eligible undergrads. There's no limit to the number of students who receive it, and you never have to pay it back.

Please follow our instructions to apply for COF. If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to contact us.

We sent this email on Thursday, Jan. 15, at 7 p.m. to students who had not supplied CU Boulder with their Social Security number to CU Boulder in order to receive COF funds for Fall 2025.

Your College Opportunity Fund (COF) stipend couldn’t be applied during Fall 2025 because you hadn’t supplied CU Boulder with your Social Security number (SSN).

To address this mismatch, the Office of the Registrar worked with the Colorado Department of Education to add your SSN to your CU Boulder student record. This will allow you to receive COF funds for Fall 2025.

No action is needed on your part at this time. If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to contact us.

We sent this email at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 13, 2026, to individuals who needed to receive a 1098-T tuition statement for 2025, didn't have an SSN or TIN on file, and didn't receive the October 2025 version of this email.

Dear [first],

You are required by federal law to provide a Social Security number (SSN) or Taxpayer Identification number (TIN) to CU Boulder for tax purposes.*

If you fail to do so, the U.S. Internal Revenue Service (IRS) may impose a financial penalty of $50 (26 CFR 1.6050S-1(e)).

Take Action by Wednesday, March 11

To resolve this issue, submit an SSN/TIN update form and a copy of your SSN or TIN card to the Office of the Registrar by mail or secure document upload by 5 p.m. on Wednesday, March 11, 2026.

CU Boulder Employees

You may have reported your SSN to HR, however, our systems do not currently communicate and you will need to report it to the Office of the Registrar as well to fulfill this requirement.

Privacy

CU Boulder protects the confidentiality of personally identifiable information and will not disclose an SSN or TIN for any purpose not permitted by law or policy (including FERPA) without your consent.

*Federal Requirement

Section 6109 of the Internal Revenue Code requires you to provide your correct SSN or TIN so CU Boulder can file Form 1098-T (Tuition Statement) with the IRS and provide a statement to you.

Wednesday, Jan. 28: Your diploma and/or certificate(s) will be mailed and your complimentary certified electronic diploma and/or certified electronic certificate(s) are ready to download. Please allow 8 to 12 weeks from this date for your paper diploma/certificate to arrive.

What Happens on Academic Alert?

Your unofficial transcript will show that you are on academic alert, but this will not appear on your official transcript. Additionally, you are still eligible to enroll in classes as long as you have resolved your hold(s).

If you improve your cumulative CU GPA to 2.000 by the end of your next semester of enrollment after being placed on academic alert, you will return to good academic standing. Students who do not earn a cumulative CU GPA of 2.000 while on academic alert will be placed on academic warning. Students can use summer to return to good academic standing, but summer enrollment that negatively impacts GPA will not result in academic warning.

We identified a system error that impacted your College Opportunity Fund (COF) authorization. When you completed your preregistration tasks for Spring 2026, you made a selection for COF authorization. This selection also updated your authorization for the Fall 2025 semester in addition to spring, which you may not have wanted.

How to Review Your Current COF Authorization

Go to the College Opportunity Fund (COF) card in Buff Portal (you may be required to log in).
Click View your COF status.
On the COF Authorization/Review page, view the COF Details section for your Fall 2025 status. If the section doesn’t display for you, click Update Authorization to review.

Your Next Steps

If you are happy with your COF status for Fall 2025, no action is needed on your part.

If you’d like to refuse COF for Fall 2025, please contact us before Friday, Jan. 9 and we can assist in updating your COF authorization. After this date, we can no longer change your COF status for Fall 2025, only your status for future terms.

�Թ�� COF

COF is a stipend that pays a portion of your in-state tuition on a per-credit-hour basis. When you authorize COF, you can choose lifetime authorization or refuse authorization. If you refuse authorization, you’ll be responsible for paying full tuition for the term indicated.
