Cresten’s research interests focus on applying biological solutions to address modern infrastructural and ecosystem challenges. His current interests include monitoring and describing the fate and biotransformation of anthropogenic pollutants in aquatic systems, enhancing and domesticating microbial communities associated with bioremediation, bioproduction, health-facilities, and public infrastructure, and constructing and applying statistical and mechanistic models predicting the behavior of microorganisms in engineered environments.

Cresten additionally takes microscopes with him during runs in the mountains to observe the microbially world in such a macro landscape. He is addicted to running, completing more than two marathons each year.
